When I was a teenager growing up in Winsted I had a single goal. That goal was to leave Winsted. I swiftly realized my dream of moving away, and I was proud of that, but I frequently returned to visit family. Sometimes I would run into people I used to associate with during my visits, and they all appeared to be happy and well balanced despite never moving away from their home town. Over the years they bought their own houses, and started their own families. They were happy and content. Slowly I began to appreciate the value of living in Winsted and the northwest corner of Connecticut in general. I’m not saying that I want to move back. I don’t. However, I fully understand why someone would want to stay in Winsted. It has its problems, but there are also plenty of reasons to stick around.
This small site shows some photographs that I made in Winsted over the past few years. I would like to continue photographing the town and its residents in an effort to show how things change, and how things stay the same. I am not interested in glorifying anything or anyone, but I am interested in showing the good, the bad, and the ugly. Winsted is a fine example of a town that appears to be average, but its history is full of characters and stories. If you would like to participate in my project, or if you want to share a story, drop me a line. I will let you know the next time I’m in town.
Thanks,
Jim Turbert
